Our TMJ and Implant x-rays as well as all other cross sectional tomography films are performed on our new Cone Beam CT Scanner. This system provides 3D imaging technology at a significantly lower cost and less radiation than traditional CT, all in a unit that fits nicely in our laboratory. The patient is seated while the tubehead rotates 360 degrees around the head, capturing the entire skull data onto a special image detector and transferring it to a sophisticated software program that allows us to format the data & select any desired image slices for viewing. The entire Scan time for the patient is less than 30 seconds. Cone Beam CT scanners utilizes the same type of low energy dental x-ray source as existing panoramic/tomographic imaging systems, resulting in effective exposure dose similar to that for a dental periapical full-mouth or panoramic/tomographic/cephalometric series. The image receptor is an amorphous silicon flat panel detector with a special high grade scintillator resulting in higher image quality and resolution & a lower radiation dose to the patient.
